Are We Reaching The Biological Limits Of Life Expectancy?

Kathleen explores the reasons why the increase in life expectancy and the number of people living to 100 have both slowed down in the 21st Century—except for one country. Peter looks at “Blue Zones,” where many people live to 100.

Kathleen’s Deep Dive

A detailed study across 10 countries for the period 1999 to 2019 found that although life expectancy increased by an accelerating rate in the 20th century, this rate has slowed in the 21st century. It raises the question of whether we have reached the biological limits of life expectancy and that the probability of more people living to 100 is not going to increase.

There is one exception, more residents of Hong Kong continue to enjoy an increasing chance of living to 100 than those in the other countries in the study.

Other experts quoted in the study disagree that there is a biological limit and suggest that with research into anti-aging and better social support we could see the trend to increased numbers of healthy centenarians increase.

A statistical model indicates that a significant number of people would need to live to 150 and 25% to 122 for a radical shift in life expectancy to occur.
