This post is by Dr. Carol Mentz, author of the book “Best Sex Ever After Menopause”. Dr. Mentz was our guest in episode 451 on The Yakking Show – now Health Declassified.
Sex is a taboo subject. Perimenopause and menopause have been unspoken and untaught. This has changed in the last few years, yet there’s still the false narrative that the end of women’s fertility marks the end of our sexuality. I’m 80 and on a mission to provide and promote the knowledge and skills for women having their Best Sex Ever After Menopause.
I was perimenopausal in my mid-forties. I reached menopause before I was 50. By my mid-fifties, vaginal dryness and a declining libido started shadowing intimacy with my seven-years younger husband. While hormones were recommended, I was repelled by the idea of putting something into my body made from pregnant horses’ urine. In 2002, felt my resistance was vindicated when the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) claimed that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was “flat-out dangerous.” In 2018, the world learned that the WHI findings were wrong, and its data had been manipulated.
My book is about how I healed and changed without hormones, twice battling breast cancer, and having no learning resources for perimenopause and menopause.

Partnering with intimacy coach, Molly Carter, readers will find:
- Valid research about the physical and psychological benefits of sexual pleasure.
- The criteria for achieving magnificent sex.
- Guidance on harnessing the power of the brain’s neuroplasticity for positive change in our thoughts and actions.
- Practical communication tools that support our intimate connections.
- The ‘what’, why’ and ‘how’ of ancient natural plants that heal vaginal dryness and have aphrodisiac effects.
- Drawings and functional explanations of female and male genitalia.
- Descriptions of sex toys and how they work.
- Real-life stories of ‘playing with pleasure’.

After receiving my BS in 1966 and MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching) in 1967 from Cornell University, I worked as a remedial reading specialist and managed a tutoring center for elementary through high school age students. In 1977, after earning a PhD in Educational Technology from Catholic University, I started my 40-year career designing and developing instructor-facilitated, video-based, and online training programs for Fortune 500 companies, federal and state agencies, private businesses, and international non-profits. Integral to every training program my team and I developed were concrete ways to measure learning’s key goal: change for the better in what people do, achieve, and feel.
I’m blessed to be a besotted grandmother, proud mother, adoring mother-in-law, and cherished wife.
While I’m focused on helping women, I support everyone’s right, with trust, respect and consent to actualize their sexual pleasure.
